How has the Jeep Wagoneer transformed over the years?
The Wagoneer moniker has a lot of significance in the American automotive culture. Probably one of the first SUVs to come into existence, the Jeep Wagoneer had a redefining impact on the segment. The Wagoneer hit the market in 1963 as a full-size body-on-frame SUV and was known as the SJ Wagoneer. The Wagoneer instantly penetrated the market, and such was its popularity, that it remained unchanged all the way till 1991. And after almost three decades, Jeep is bringing the legend back to life in the form of the Grand Wagoneer SUV. So, how has the Jeep Wagoneer transformed over the years?
Jeep brought back the Wagoneer as an upscale form of the unibody-based compact XJ Cherokee that was manufactured from 1983 to 1990. The XJ Wagoneer was available in two trim levels – “Wagoneer” and “Wagoneer Limited”. These vehicles were originally intended to replace the SJ Wagoneer. But the original SJ version’s popularity prompted the brand to continue producing the SJ Wagoneer alongside the XJ Cherokee Wagoneer trims.

And now Jeep has brought back the legend in the form of the full-size Wagoneer SUV and the full-size luxury Grand Wagoneer SUV. Both these vehicles will be based on the RAM 1500 (DT) Chassis. Jeep has put together a video showcasing the history of the Wagoneer. Here it is:
